Why most openers are ignored
They are about the sender. They open with who we are, what we do and who we work with, and they ask for thirty minutes. The reader has no reason to believe the message was written for them, because it was not. An opener tied to a buying signal fixes this in the first line, by proving you noticed something specific about their business this week.
The four-part structure
- 01Name the trigger. The listing, the hire, the depot, the filing, the tender. One sentence.
- 02Connect it to a pain that usually follows. This is where your understanding of the market shows.
- 03Offer something useful with no pitch attached: a comparison, an example, a question.
- 04Ask for something small. A reply, a yes or no, fifteen minutes. Never thirty on a first message.
Channel notes for the UK
- Email: still the default for operations, finance and procurement roles. Keep it under a hundred words and make the subject line the trigger, not your company name.
- LinkedIn: better for founders, marketing and sales roles, and for anyone who has just changed job. Connection notes are short, so lead with the trigger and nothing else.
- Phone: works in trades, logistics, manufacturing and construction, where people are away from their desks and email piles up. Have the dossier open when you dial.
- Post and in-person: slow, expensive and remarkably effective for high-value local prospects. A short letter that names the trigger stands out because nobody sends them.
Mistakes that undo a good signal
- Naming the trigger and then pitching as though you had not. The trigger has to shape the ask.
- Fake familiarity. Do not pretend to know them. Show you looked, and stop there.
- Attachments and links on a first message. They get filtered and they look like a campaign.
- Following up with just checking in. Follow up with a second, different piece of value or not at all.
